The aim of the workshop is to create a sphere of collaboration between researchers\, practitioners and students from different fields\, bringing scholars together from a variety of disciplines. \n \nBy inviting scholars from a variety of fields\, the workshop is looking to create a collaborative platform exploring the application of AI-driven advances in the digital humanities. It aims to foster innovative methodologies through interdisciplinary dialogue and the exchange of knowledge by researchers\, practitioners and students. SUMMARY:Digital infrastructure for Language Data in Switzerland: current state and perspectives
DESCRIPTION:The members of the one-year project “Moving towards a national FAIR-compliant ecosystem of Federated Infrastructure for Language Data” (FAIR-FI-LD\, co-funded through swissuniversities Open Science I program\, Open Research Data) invite interested researchers\, data stewards and other experts to attend a workshop dedicated to the existing infrastructure for language data in Switzerland and future perspectives of development. The project members will present their findings and dialogue with further invited speakers to address epistemological and technical challenges of managing and interconnecting digital infrastructure for language data within and beyond Switzerland. \nThe presentations will regard three topics: \n\nThe design of corpus infrastructure to suit diverse language data and different research paradigms in linguistics and beyond\nCase studies featuring recent linguistic corpora collected in Switzerland\nInteroperability issues regarding metadata\, formats\, database design and query languages\n\nThe workshop is organised by Johanna Miecznikowski and Elena Battaglia (USI) on behalf of FAIR-FI-LD\, a collaboration between University of Zurich (CLARIN-CH and LiRI)\, ZHAW (Digital Discourse Lab) and USI (Istituto di studi italiani\, E-Lab). \nA detailed schedule can be found here. \nThe event takes place on site. DESCRIPTION:Language data from public communication is becoming increasingly valuable – not only for (applied) linguistics\, but also for disciplines such as the humanities\, social sciences\, psychology\, and communication and media studies. Open access to corpora of public discourse is therefore essential for advancing research across fields. Swiss-AL is a key resource in this area: it offers multilingual corpora of Swiss public communication\, including journalistic media\, parliamentary transcripts\, and press releases and news items from a broad spectrum of organizations and institutions in politics\, the economy\, science\, and civil society. Swiss-AL is part of Switzerland’s linguistic research infrastructure and a core component of CLARIN-CH. It is developed at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) by the ZHAW Digital Discourse Lab\, one of five entities of national infrastructure situated within the CLARIN-CH ecosystem. \n \nIn this training session\, participants will get to know the new Swiss-AL Workbench – a platform designed to give researchers direct access to the Swiss-AL corpora and to support a variety of data-driven research methods\, including topic modeling\, word embeddings\, distributional analysis\, context exploration\, and frequency analysis. SUMMARY:Modelling of Multi-Modal Data in LiRI Corpus Platform and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:While there exist common solutions and standard practices to model text-only corpora\, multimodal conversation corpora present the unique challenge of integrating textual transcripts\, temporal information and annotations that can equally relate to speech and non-speech modalities. The LiRI Corpus Platform (LCP) was designed to accommodate both textual and multimodal corpora\, allowing for the modeling of time-aligned annotations associated with multimedia files\, making it possible for users of the platform to efficiently browse and query multimodal corpora. LCP aims to become a solution of reference for hosting multimodal corpora and we especially encourage curators of such corpora to attend this session. \nIn this session\, we will report on the process of importing a multimodal conversation corpus into LCP as part of the FAIR FI-LD project. We will give an overview of the different file formats that were involved in the modelling of the corpus and explain how we converged on using the TEI/ISO format as our interoperable standard. Participants will then engage in a practical exercise as they are guided through a simple Python script to import a simplified sample corpus into LCP. DESCRIPTION:LiRI collaborates with SMD (Schweizer Mediendatenbank AG) to provide researchers with access to Swissdox\, a comprehensive database containing approximately 24 million media articles (press\, online) from a wide range of Swiss media sources spanning multiple decades. \nIn this session\, participants will learn how to navigate the Swissdox@LiRI platform\, explore its search functions\, and refine queries to retrieve and download relevant media data. In addition\, the session includes a hands-on introduction to basic analytical approaches in Python\, demonstrating how Swissdox data can be processed and examined for research purposes. \nSwissdox@LiRI is a paid service\, but for this training session\, we will provide access to a selection of sample data in German and French. This allows participants who are not affiliated with a supporting institution to test the platform’s functionalities. We will delve into the principles of copyright and their implications for publishing research data\, as well as the benefits and limitations of various licensing options. We will examine how to properly apply a license to linguistic datasets and discuss the significance of doing so for fostering reuse and collaboration. By the end of the session\, participants will be equipped with the knowledge to responsibly share their linguistic data while protecting their intellectual property rights\, and to reuse data respecting the terms of the applied license. \nAfter the 30 minute talk by Stefanie Strebel\, there will be enough time for a Q&A session and further discussion of the topic. \nStefanie Strebel has a background in English Literature but transitioned into the field of Open Research Data after working for an Open Access publisher for three years. In 2019\, she joined the Open Science Services team at the University of Zurich as a data expert and now leads the data sub-team. We will also delve into the new regulatory framework under the Digital Services Act\, exploring its implications for data use across various platforms. Whatever your research focus\, if you use social media data\, this session will provide valuable guidance on navigating the complex legal landscape. \nPaweł Kamocki is a researcher at the Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache and Chair of the CLARIN Legal and Ethical Issues Committee. He holds a Doctor of Law (Dr. iur.) degree (Münster\, Paris)\, as well as a Master’s degree in linguistics (Warsaw)\, and graduated from the Paris Barrister Training School. His scientific interests are centered around legal issues affecting data-intensive science\, especially in the field of linguistics and Digital Humanities; he published a number of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on these questions. He also co-chaired the Working group on Data Access and Re-Use Policies and helped develop such Legal Tech tools as the Public License Selector and the DARIAH ELDAH Consent Form Wizard.
