SUMMARY:Webinar on Cross-border projects: Which laws apply?
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce the webinar Cross-border projects: which laws apply?\, which is organised within the CLARIN-CH Working Group Management of Sensitive and Personal data\, Ethical and Legal issues for linguistic data and will include the presentation of two case studies. \n\nThe recording and slides of the webinar can be accessed here: \n💻 Recording   📄 Slides case study 1   📄 Slides case study 2 \nCase study 1: Data protection\, data storage and data sharing in a Swiss-Indian research project\nIn this webinar\, we present the data protection\, data storage and data sharing challenges we have faced as part of the Indo-Swiss research project “Mapping Heritage Language Structure through Sociolinguistic Cues: A Case Study of Swiss Tamil” (2023-2026). The main focus of the project is on the language use of second-generation Swiss Tamil speakers (in the German- and French-speaking parts of Switzerland). In order to compare their language to baseline data\, we have also collected data in India and Sri Lanka. The involvement of three countries with different legal requirements\, two universities and now likely also an external partner\, has required legal agreements between the concerned parties. In this talk\, we will thus describe the challenges and the solutions found. \nSpeakers: Anita Auer is Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Lausanne. Rajamathangi Shanmugasundaram is a Postdoctoral Researcher on the above-mentioned Indo-Swiss research project at the University of Lausanne. \nCase study 2: How Blurred Can It Get? Considerations on the De-Identification of Video Data in Different Contexts\nThis talk will present the process of preparing a Swiss dataset of 180 peer discussions between elementary schoolchildren for publication on a German corpus platform for conversational data. The video and transcript data\, collected in the course of two SNSF-funded projects on oral argumentation skills\, went through various steps of anonymization (i.e.\, de-identification) to arrive at their final product. I will discuss the challenges that arise when balancing data richness with standards of data protection in different countries and contexts. \nSpeaker: Oliver Spiess works as a research assistant in the SNSF project KompAS at the University of Basel. He wrangles and analyzes data from 180 peer conversations between schoolchildren with a focus on the argumentation skills at different grades. \nThis webinar is part of a series of webinars\, which are taking place monthly during spring 2024 and the autumn semester. Discover the list of planned webinars here.

SUMMARY:CLARIN-CH Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:Introduction\n\n\n\nThe event is the first of a series of annual meetings of the CLARIN-CH community. It is organized by the CLARIN-CH consortium in cooperation with its member institutions and aims to support the scientific community in their challenges when it comes to Open Research data. It seeks to foster exchange and to enable the encounter between researchers and data management experts\, as well as legal experts. \nThe 2024 edition aims to bring together experts and researchers to discuss challenges and opportunities\, and to open the dialogue on standards and practices of open research data as well as the legal and ethical aspects of processing and sharing linguistic data. The event builds on the work done by two CLARIN-CH Working Groups\, which address essential topics related to Open Research Data. \nData Pitches\nPresent challenges and opportunities you discovered in handling your research data with respect to Open Science principles and receive insightful feedback from peers and experts. You are also invited to submit a contribution if you haven’t collected the data yet\, but want to address potential challenges and opportunities. \nWorld Café\nParticipate in discussions with the invited experts: \n\nBrian Kleiner (FORS) – data protection\nSimone Mäder (UNIBAS) – data protection\nSuzanna Marazza (CCdigitallaw\, USI) – copyright and other legal aspects\nGerold Schneider (LiRI\, UZH) – data formats and technical issues\nTeodora Vukovic (LiRI\, UZH) – data formats and technical issues\nChristian Futter (UB UZH\, Open Science Services and the Language Repository of Switzerland) – data storing and sharing\n\nThe world café format will provide time for in-depth discussions\, allowing participants to explore solutions to the challenges presented during the data pitches. This interactive setting is designed to foster meaningful exchanges and collaborative brainstorming. \n\n\nCall for Participation\nFor the morning sessions\, we welcome submissions for data pitches on one or several of the four topics listed below. Data pitches should address challenges you face(d) related to the chosen theme(s) and if possible\, present solutions. Each data pitch should be no longer than 5-10 minutes and held in English. Presentation slides are recommended. Submissions may also be made if the data has not been yet collected\, but it presents potential challenges and/or opportunities. \nTopics\n\nCopyright describes the rights that creators have over their literary and artistic works\, including their data. Researchers can encounter several challenges related to copyright when handling their data. These challenges can impact data sharing and reuse. Some key issues include questions around what can be shared\, how to attribute sources\, and whether specific data can be used freely or requires permission. Copyright considerations also come into play when deciding how to license the data for sharing.\nWhen it comes to data protection and the management of personal and sensitive data\, several critical issues arise: Researchers need to find the right balance between sharing data for research purposes and safeguarding individuals’ privacy. De-identification techniques can help here. They come with their own risks\, however: It is quite impossible to render a dataset completely anonymous without also jeopardizing data utility\, other datasets and additional information can potentially lead to re-identification of individuals and some types of linguistic data are less suited for these techniques. Security measures need to be taken to safe-guard personal and sensitive data\, which poses additional problems\, e.g. in collaborative projects. Also\, linguists collecting data in other countries or from specific target groups need to navigate the complex legal landscape to ensure that the management and sharing of linguistic data comply with all relevant laws and regulations.\nWith regard to data formats (e.g. audio\, video\, text) and their technical aspects\, linguists can also encounter various challenges. These include integrating diverse data formats for comprehensive linguistic analyses\, harmonizing multimodal data\, with annotating linguistic data consistently across formats\, maintaining uniformity in transcription conventions\, in part-of-speech tagging and in semantic labeling\, with storing large-scale data (especially video) efficiently and having appropriate retrieval solutions\, with optimizing storage formats\, indexing and query performance\, and with applying standardized formats across various systems.\nTo store and share their data\, linguists are further presented with the issue of selecting appropriate repositories that align with their data type (and the intended audience)\, of storing the data in appropriate (standardized) formats\, and of working collaboratively while effectively with other team members. Additionally\, they are faced with the challenges of safeguarding sensitive and personal data while also making it accessible and taking into account expectations and value-systems of participants\, as well as ensuring the researchers’ responsibility towards the population from which data has been gathered (according to the CARE principles).

SUMMARY:Webinar on Personal and Sensitive Data: Overview of anonymisation tools
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce the webinar Overview of anonymisation tools\, which is organised within the CLARIN-CH Working Group Management of Sensitive and Personal data\, Ethical and Legal issues for linguistic data. \n\nInformation on the event\nDate: 22 March 2024\nTime: 12:00-1PM\nLocation: Zoom (click here to access the webinar)\nFormat: 30 minutes of talk\, 30 minutes of Q & A\nSpeakers: Melanie Röthlisberger (UB Zürich)\, Matthias Templ (FHNW) \nMelanie Röthlisberger is a linguist by training and a member of the Open Science Services at the University Library Zurich. She advices researchers on legal aspects and how to share sensitive and personal data. She also teaches courses on how to publish sensitive and personal data to researchers at the University of Zurich. \nMatthias Templ is Professor of Statistics at the FHNW and author and maintainer of the R package sdcMicro. He is currently leading an SNSF Bridge Discovery project on the anonymization and synthesis of longitudinal data. Together with colleagues\, he runs the Swiss Anonymisation Centre: https://www.swissanon.ch \nAbstract: In the first part of this talk\, Melanie Röthlisberger (Open Science Services\, University of Zurich) gives a brief overview over different anonymization tools and focuses on one tool in more detail: QualiAnon is an anonymization tool for qualitative textual data. The tool was developed by Qualiservice in cooperation with Pangaea to enable researchers to anonymize or pseudonymize their research data semi-automatically in a structured way. In the second part of the talk\, Matthias Templ\, developer of sdcMicro\, will give insights into his R-package that can be used to anonymize structured quantitative data on individual units\, such as people\, households\, or organizations. Most functionalities of the package are also available via an interactive shiny-based graphical user interface. \n➡️ The slides from the webinar can be accessed here: 📄 Part 1 📄 Part 2 \nThis webinar is part of a series of webinars\, which are taking place monthly during spring 2024 and the autumn semester. Discover the list of planned webinars here.

SUMMARY:Webinar on the Protection of personal and sensitive linguistic data: Legal aspects
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce the webinar Protection of personal and sensitive linguistic data: Legal aspects\, which is organised within the CLARIN-CH Working Group Management of Sensitive and Personal data\, Ethical and Legal issues for linguistic data. \n \n\n\n\n\n\nInformation on the event\n\n\n\n\nDate: 26 February 2024\nTime: 12:00-1PM\nLocation: Zoom (click here to access the webinar)\nTopic: Protection of personal and sensitive linguistic data: Legal aspects\nFormat: 30 minutes of talk\, 30 minutes of Q & A\nSpeaker: Brian Kleiner (FORS) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar is the first of a series of webinars\, which are taking place monthly during the 2024 spring and the autumn semester. Discover the list of webinars here. \nBio and expertise: Brian Kleiner is a linguist by training. Since 2008\, he is head of Data and Research Information for the Social Sciences at FORS. As head of data services at FORS\, his ongoing work involves the provision of research infrastructure and services to support work and data sharing in the social sciences in Switzerland. He specializes in research data management topics\, such as data security\, informed consent\, and anonymization. \nAbstract: Many types of empirical linguistic data are particularly difficult to share with third parties\, due to the personally identifying information that they often contain. This puts linguists in a bind – how to respect data sharing requirements from funders and journals while at the same time comply with data protection laws? This webinar presents the stakes around this tension\, as well as some concrete solutions and recommendations for linguistics researchers working in Switzerland who are thinking about sharing their data. Specifically\, a “layered” approach to legal compliance is put forward\, which balances aspects of informed consent\, anonymisation\, and access controls\, according to the nature of one’s data and dissemination goals. \nThe recording and slides of the webinar can be accessed here: 💻 Recording 📄 Slides
