The Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics (HUN-REN) is organizing the first international workshop on language and language models (WoLaLa) from November 20th to the 21st 2025 in Budapest. The workshop aims to create a forum for researchers to discuss large language models (LLMs) from the view of social sciences and humanities (SSH) and invites scholars to contribute submissions in the form of extended abstracts.
Topics
The workshop will focus on the following topics, however it is not limited to them: The analyses of General language models including their competence, performance and limitations. Investigating Cultural and linguistic perspectives, uncovering cultural, cognitive, and scientifc aspects of language processing. The Applications and best practices concerning the use of AI in language research. Lastly, the workshop invites contributions bridging disciplines and examining the role of language models in reshaping traditional SSH methodologies.

- 15th of January 2026: Full paper submission deadline
Submissions
The committee expects researchers to to submit extended abstracts with a length of three to four pages including the references. A template explaining the specific guidelines for submissions is given. The abstracts must be submitted via the EasyChair submission system and will be reviewed according to a list of criteria that can be found on the website of the call.
After the acceptance stage a number of selected papers will be published in the international journal Acta Linguistica Academica. Authors of accepted submission will be notified and asked to submit a full paper of a length of ca. 10 to 12 pages for review.
