HiTZ webinar series on Language Technology

Since 2020, the Chair of Artificial Intelligence and Language Technology of the Basque Center for Language Technology (HiTZ) has hosted a webinar series featuring talks by key researchers in the field. The series has had prominent guest speakers such as for example Roger K. Moore.

On 4 December 2025 at 3:00 p.m. CET, the next talk of the webinar series will be held. Goran Glavaš from the University of Würzburg will give a talk on “Improving Multilingual Abilities of (Different Types of) Language Models”. The full professor for NLP focuses his research on multilingual language understanding and cross-lingual transfer, vision-and-language models, as well as trustworthiness of multilingual language models.

In the talk, Glavaš will touch on how low-resource languages are left at a disadvantage during (pre)training compared to languages with ample material. Instead of “throwing” more data at the model, boosting the performance by including resource-lean strategies that are able to improve the performance of the models in a low-resource setting, is explored.
