Online Workshop: Data Management Plans (DMPs) for Language Data

The CLARIN-CH Research Data Management Working Group (RDM WG) and the Language Research Data Management Node (L-RDM Node) of the Swiss Research Data Support Network (SRDSN), in collaboration with the LaDaD (Language Data across Disciplines) project, are organising a two-part online workshop dedicated to strengthening both the understanding and the practical writing of Data Management Plans (DMPs) for language data.

This workshop is aimed at researchers and data stewardship professionals working with language data, particularly in the context of SNSF-funded projects.

Programme

Part I – Why DMPs Matter from the Start
Date: Monday, 4 May 2026 Time: 1:00–2:30 PM (CET)
Format: Online

This session provides a general introduction to DMPs within the framework of SNSF projects, with a focus on the importance of preparing a solid DMP at an early stage of project development.

Programme highlights:
  • Why DMPs matter from the start? by Cristina Grisot
  • Keynote by Sylvia Jeney (SNSF):
    • DMPs and Open Research Data (ORD) at the SNSF
    • Why DMPs are important
    • SNSF policies
    • How the CHF 10,000 DMP allowance can be used in practice
  • Data Stewardship Wizard by Vassilios Ioannidis (SIB)
  • DMPs for language data and CLARIN by Cristina Grisot
  • Interactive exchange with participants led by Cristina Grisot
Date: Monday, 29 June 2026 Time: 1:00–2:30 PM (CET)
Format: Online

Building on Part I, this hands-on session offers concrete guidance for drafting high-quality DMPs tailored to language data. The session takes a bottom-up approach: experts comment on anonymised sample DMPs covering different data types (speech processing data, large textual data and LLMs, sociolinguistic interviews, and data involving minors), highlighting what works, what needs improvement, and what to watch out for when preparing your own DMP.

Programme:
  • Introduction (5 min) — CLARIN-CH
  • Data collection and documentation (20 min) — experts from the University of Zurich
  • Legal and ethical aspects (20 min) — Centre for Digital Law (ccdigitallaw)
  • Data storage and security (20 min) — University of Lausanne and University of Bern
  • Data preservation and archiving (10 min) — LaRS@SWISSUbase
  • Data sharing and reuse (5 min) — CLARIN-CH
  • General discussion (10 min)

The anonymised DMPs discussed during the session cover a range of challenging cases, including licensing, social media data, sensitive populations, and cross-border data collaborations.

Objectives

The two-part workshop aims to provide:

  • A strategic understanding of DMP requirements in SNSF projects
  • Practical tools and concrete examples for preparing robust DMPs for language data

Participants may attend one or both sessions.
